Lavender -
by Caroline Sposto
Lavender is a lovely, deep blue flowering herb with a heady
fragrance. Popular in ancient Egypt, Greece and Arabia, its use has
been documented in history for thousands of years. Lavender served
to soothe, calm and restore both the body and mind in the scented
baths of ancient Rome. In fact, the name "Lavender" most likely
evolved from the Latin root words "lavare" meaning to wash or
"livendula" meaning livid blue. In biblical times, lavender was also
called "spikenard" and it is mentioned several times by that name in
the bible.
The value of lavender is both physiological and psychological.
Lavender oil has natural astringent, antiseptic and healing
properties. Used in oils, lotions, soaps and cleansers, it naturally
and gently benefits the skin.
Lavender aroma has proven its worth as a de-stresser. Many of our
customers use Paisley products in lavender to counteract insomnia,
because it helps to reduce nervous tension and apprehension, making
it easy for them to drift off to sleep. A classical singer who
frequents our store tells us that using our lavender products helps
her to counteract stage fright. Several mothers who buy Paisley
lavender products tell us that they help to calm their young
children after a busy day, making the bedtime routine easier for
all. A full body massage with our lavender massage oil is a soothing
way to partner the healing power of touch with these wonderful
herbal benefits. And, if this isn’t enough, folklore tells us
"couples that place lavender between their sheets will never
quarrel."
