Patchouli -
by Caroline Sposto
From a botanical standpoint, Patchouli is a tropical member of the
mint family that is grown in the East and West Indies. We make all
Paisley & Company Patchouli products using only pure, high
quality essential oil.
Patchouli oil is heavy with a deep amber color. Its fragrance is
rich, exotic and woody. Although it is one of our best sellers, we
consider it a polarizing fragrance, in part because it is very
strong. We have observed that our Patchouli customers can’t get
enough of it, while non-enthusiasts prefer to wear almost any other
fragrance.
If you are old enough to remember the 1960’s and 1970’s you will
probably remember the popularity of Patchouli oils and incense.
However, Patchouli popularity pre-dates this era. Some of our senior
customers who shop in the store remember their mothers and
grandmothers using Patchouli oil as an effective moth repellant in
their closets. In fact, at one time, Europeans and Americans
wouldn’t buy imitation Asian and Indian carpets because they didn’t
smell like Patchouli, making them seem less than authentic.
Other Paisley Patchouli customers tell us that Patchouli is an
effective mosquito repellant.
Patchouli oil has natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties,
making it an excellent addition to lotions, soaps and shampoos. Its
scent is said to have a calming effect, and some people use it to
counter insomnia.
If you are a Patchouli lover, this is the place for you! You can buy
the following Paisley & Company products in Patchouli. Just use
